New video game designed with renowned physical education expert engages kids to exercise with their favorite Nickelodeon characters

 

2K Play and Nickelodeon Kids Launch fitness Fit for Wii™

Sydney Australia – December 9, 2010 – 2K Play and Nickelodeon have launched Nickelodeon Fit exclusively for the Wii™ system, which provides kids with an innovative and fun way to help them kick-start a healthy and active lifestyle alongside their favorite Nickelodeon characters. Nickelodeon Fit was created to motivate and engage children to participate in a series of exercises featuring their beloved characters from the top-rated Nickelodeon TV shows, Dora the Explorer, Go, Diego, Go!, Ni Hao, Kai-lan, and The Backyardigans.

Featuring 30 games developed in collaboration with physical education and exercise science expert Dr. Jacqueline Goodway, PhD, Nickelodeon Fit includes games that target cardiovascular activity, core muscles, upper and lower body strength, balance, motor skill development, and coordination. By including a variety of exercises into one game, children can experience a full-body workout that is both fun and challenging. Activities use either the Wii Remote™ or the Wii Balance Board™ accessory and include trampolining with Dora, skateboarding with Diego, running with Kai-lan, jumping rope with The Backyardigans, participating in a relay race with all of the game’s characters, and much more.

 
“We know from research that in their early years, children learn the exercise patterns that will carry over to their adult lives,” said Dr. Goodway, chair of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education’s (NASPE) “Active Start” physical activity guidelines committee. “We hope that regular participation with Nickelodeon Fit will empower children to start on the road to an active and healthy lifestyle.”
 
In addition, Nickelodeon Fit encourages parents to get involved with their children’s exercise routine. Through the Fitness Stats tracking feature, parents can ensure their child is receiving a proper workout by monitoring total exercise time and intensity on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Nickelodeon Fit offers helpful fitness icons at the beginning of each exercise that indicate if the activity is vigorous, moderate, or light and which fitness categories are being targeted. Parents can also create custom workouts based on their child’s needs and interests, such as including more cardio or stretching games.

AUTHORS:

Denis Baker is a newspaper columnist and public speaker who has also worked in education, employment and training. He has written books on subjects ranging from employment to sport.

 

Ian Baker is a retired automotive technician and tireless community worker who has been deeply involved with getting young people into sport and supporting the elderly. He and his wife Denise have four children and four grandchildren. Ian loves fishing, lawn bowls and the Sydney Swans.

 

Like his brother Denis, Paul Baker held senior roles in the education, employment and training sectors and was involved in voluntary work helping homeless people in western Sydney. He died in 2010 after a year long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Mary, their two children and four grandchildren.

June 25, 2011, in honor of Global Smurfs Day, Smurfs fans in 11 cities around the world set a new Guinness World Records title for the Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Smurfs within a 24-hour Period in Multiple Venues, it was announced by Marc Weinstock, president, Worldwide Marketing for Sony Pictures Entertainment.

 

The worldwide events were organized by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Pictures Animation in anticipation of the release of The Smurfs®, which will be released in Australia on September 1 (TAS), September 8 (QLD), September 11 (NSW, VIC, WA, SA).

As worldwide audiences turned out to celebrate the birthday of Peyo, the creator of the Smurfs, fans came to events dressed as Smurfs (white Smurf hat, white pants and shoes, and body painted blue). Adjudicators from Guinness World Records confirmed that a total of 4,891 people dressed as Smurfs in 11 locations simultaneously around the world, claiming a new title for Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Smurfs within a 24-hour Period in Multiple Venues. The previous record had been 2,510 people dressed as Smurfs.
 
The global record was set by people dressed as Smurfs in Brussels, Belgium; Athens, Greece; Scheveningen (The Hague), Holland; Dublin, Ireland; Mexico City, Mexico; Panama City, Panama; Warsaw, Poland; Moscow, Russia; Johannesburg, South Africa; New York, USA; and London, UK.
 
Commenting on the announcement, Weinstock said, “It’s a thrill to see so many people turn out to be a part of this true fan moment in Smurfs history. Breaking a Guinness World Record on Global Smurfs Day is a testament to the enormous appeal and popularity of these beloved characters.”
 
Aleksandr Vypirailenko, Guinness World Records Adjudicator, added, “We are impressed by the level of coordination and timing required to pull off this truly global record attempt. With 11 cities, each with hundreds of people dressed as Smurfs – and it all happened simultaneously. We apply the same strict rules and exacting approach to every record that we recognize, and it’s exciting to see that this record was not simply broken, but smashed.”
 
In addition, people around the world observed Global Smurfs Day, from lit monuments in Brazil to a fun-filled family event at the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. In France, Smurf figurines inhabited Paris’s garden of the Champs de Mars (in front of the Eiffel Tower).
