Commonwealth Bank’s Community Grants Program open to local children’s charities

Written by editor. Posted in Community News

June 2010: According to a recent survey1 of more than 1,000 Australians commissioned by Commonwealth Bank, 95 per cent of Australians believe it’s important to support children’s charities, 87 per cent believe grass roots charities are often overlooked and two in three believe local charities are struggling in the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis.

Commonwealth Bank Staff Community Fund is dedicated to helping ensure grass roots children’s charities receive the funding and attention they need. Funded entirely by Commonwealth Bank staff, applications for the 2010 Community Grants Program opened today, and will provide over half a million dollars in individual grants of up to $10,000 to assist children’s charities.

Ms Barbara Chapman, Commonwealth Bank Group Executive and Chair of the Staff Community Fund said: “The Community Grants Program is a great way for our people to make a difference to children’s charities in local communities around Australia.

“Past recipients work in areas such as early intervention programs for at-risk youth, the provision of equipment and facilities that cater for youth with disabilities and illness, nutrition programs in primary schools or respite camps for families with sick children,” Ms Chapman said.

The Fund’s Community Grants Program has contributed over $2.1 million, to more than 250 charities since 2007 - with every dollar donated by staff going directly to community charities that support Aussie kids in need.

Founded in 1917, the Commonwealth Bank Staff Community Fund is Australia’s longest running employee contribution program. The Fund is supported by 6,000 current and retired Bank staff, who make regular salary contributions to support children’s charities.

Community Grants Program applications close on 30 July 2010. To apply or for more information, visit commbank.com.au/grants

1 The study was commissioned by Commonwealth Bank, and conducted by Lonergan Research amongst 1,029 Australians aged 18 years and over, from 24 May to 28 May 2010.

State and Territory Top Teachers Announced on the World Teachers’ Day

29 October 2010 - NEiTA (National Excellence in Teaching Awards) and the Australian Scholarships Group (ASG) have announced the recipients of the NEiTA 2010 ASG Inspirational Teaching State and Territory Awards on Australia’s celebration of World Teachers’ Day – Friday, 29 October 2010.

60 teachers from across Australia will receive awards as representatives of Australia’s excellent and inspiring teaching force. Local education communities nominated the teachers, principals, and directors for their admirable leadership qualities, their dedication and their excellence in teaching. Sharing complementary themes, NEiTA and World Teachers’ Day celebrate the invaluable role great teachers play as they educate and guide their students, and as they contribute to Australia’s future.

Congratulating the recipients, Mr Terry O’Connell, NEiTA’s Chairman said: “Together these 60 teachers showcase the diversity and excellence of Australia’s teaching profession. They teach all stages of education from early childhood through to secondary schooling, and across the entire spectrum of education settings including government schools, systemic schools and private schools.

“The NEiTA 2010 ASG Inspirational Teaching State and Territory Award teachers have made important contributions to their communities through their teaching. Their commitment often sees them dedicate their personal time to inspire a love of learning in their students, to work alongside families, and to build important connections within the community,” Mr O’Connell said.

Some of the activities in which these inspirational teachers engage their students include using new technology to stimulate their students’ learning, establishing community gardens to inspire an understanding of sustainability and healthy eating, and taking their students and subjects beyond the classroom to contribute to their students’ understanding of their communities and their environment.

NEiTA is Australia’s only national, independent community-centred teaching awards program that gives Australian secondary students, parents, early childhood and school communities the opportunity to nominate teachers who they believe to be committed, dedicated, and outstanding representatives of the teaching profession.

The 60 NEiTA 2010 ASG Inspirational Teaching State and Territory Award recipients are made up of 10 early childhood teachers, 30 primary school teachers, and 20 secondary school teachers. This year, 18 per cent of the award recipients are school principals or early education centre directors, while 82 per cent are teachers. In addition, the recipients’ teaching experience spans between three and 42 years.

Now in its 17th year, the NEiTA program continues to offer communities an opportunity to celebrate the work of great teachers who inspire their students and their communities. ASG has supported the NEiTA ASG Inspirational Teaching Awards since 1994, and together NEiTA and ASG have helped pioneer the recognition of the important contribution teachers make to our community.
