Big kids turn playtime into a performance
Three inner-city playgrounds will be brought to life by the big kids behind SPILL, a unique outdoor production for children and families.
Following sold out tours in Europe, Sydney’s newest dance company, Shaun Parker & Company, will bring SPILL to Sydney for its Australian debut with 30 free performances and workshops at Victoria Park in Camperdown, Wentworth Park in Ultimo, and Sydney Park in Alexandria, between 20 September and 7 October.
As part of Art & About Sydney, SPILL will showcase a series of highly-choreographed dance performances combining quirky, dynamic dance moves using children’s playgrounds as the stage.
Created by award-winning Australian director and choreographer, Shaun Parker, and composed by Nick Wales, SPILL is a tongue-in-cheek celebration of the child within.
Each performance is unique as the characters of SPILL blaze a colourful trail across the structures and landscapes of the playground apparatus, manoeuvring around, over, under and through swings, slides, see-saws, monkey bars and roundabouts.
SPILL performances will run daily at 10.30am and 12.30pm at:
- Victoria Park, Camperdown from Friday 20 to Monday 23 September
- Wentworth Park, Ultimo from Thursday 26 to Monday 30 September
- Sydney Park, Alexandria from Friday 4 to Monday 7 October
In 2012, SPILL toured more than 36 locations in the UK and featured in a 10-part series created for the BBC’s SPACE channel as part of the International Dance Festival Birmingham, Dancing for the Games and the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
SPILL was originally commissioned by Dancexchange Birmingham.
