THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS opens in cinemas April 5
Sony Pictures Releasing is delighted to announce Hugh Grant is coming to Australia to promote his new family comedy THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS.

Hugh Grant will walk the red carpet at the Australian Premiere in Sydney on Sunday April 1 at 3.30pm at Event Cinemas George Street.

Sony Picture releases family movie The Pirates! Band of Misfits

In The Pirates! Band of Misfits, Hugh Grant stars in his first animated role as the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain – a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas.

With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to the much coveted Pirate Of The Year Award.

It’s a quest that takes our heroes from the shores of exotic Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London. Along the way they battle a diabolical queen (Imelda Staunton) and team up with a haplessly smitten young scientist (David Tennant), but never lose sight of what a pirate loves best: adventure!

Parenting book: Who Runs Your House – The Kids or You? by Karen Phillip

Parenting book: Who Runs Your House – The Kids or You? by Karen Phillip

Having trouble controlling your chaotic children? Family Counsellor Karen Phillip is here to helpAs a parent, it can often feel as though it’s the kids who hold the power in the household and it’s this feeling that Karen Phillip aims to change. With over 20 years of experience, parent and family counsellor Karen Phillip has launched a new book, Who Runs Your House – The Kids or You? The book explores the relationship between parents and their children and the boundaries that need to be set in order to redirect their child’s behaviour.

It was her own kids who initially sparked Karen’s interest in working with children. Her children had found Christmas holiday programs boring, ranging from arts and crafts activities to watching movies or playing computer games. Karen saw an opportunity to create a vacation care program with more physical and mind stimulating activities such as mini Olympics, obstacle courses and competitions. She ran the program for twenty years before building two childcare centres with her husband.

“Parents often have problems with their children and ask for my advice in regards to why their child behaves so well at school but horribly at home,” says Karen. “I always tell them that it’s important to influence and guide a child’s behaviour. It is the manner in which we guide them to settle, how we inform them of their boundaries and how the children adapt quickly to positive guidance.”

When her children were teenagers Karen decided to make use of her extensive experiences and turn them into a career. She completed her counselling qualification and a post graduate degree in counselling, majoring in family relationships and children. A highlight of Karen’s career was when she was contracted for four years as part of a federal government initiative to conduct parenting courses and offer assistance to families.

Karen has not only been a counsellor for almost two decades but a relationship therapist and a family dispute resolution practitioner with the Attorney General’s Department where she prepares parenting plans after separations, a relationship therapist. Now, she can add an author to that list! The wide range of topics covered in her new book include:

  • The dad’s role
  • Tantrums
  • Sibling rivalry
  • Phasing out the dummy, bottle and nappies
  • When to start giving chores to kids
  • Diet and nutrition

As a mother of three children, Karen has admitted to making her own mistakes when raising a family. In learning through her errors and through life experiences, she is now able to help other families. Who Runs Your House – The Kids or You? is an easy read that aims to help parents with younger children and to encourage positive habits earlier on rather than trying to reverse these actions when negative habits have already begun. “When the children are small, the problems are smaller; however, left unattended when the kids grow up, the problems are bigger,” says Karen.

Travel app Bound Round for kids' holiday planning in Sydney

Visiting Sydney just got a whole lot more interesting. Especially for kids. Locally developed by kids for kids, the Bound Round travel app, has expanded its Sydney destination guide to now encompass more than 47 locations. A 42% increase since its launch at Christmas in 2012.

With Bound Round, gone are the frustrations of bored kids, who get no say in the holiday planning process. Kids now have an interactive app that lets them discover – through play – all the fun things to do at their chosen destination.

What Bound Round does: Turns a long and boring journey into an enjoyable part of your trip through engagement with stories, photos, videos and games. Kids can explore the city before they arrive and help decide what they want to do when they get there.

Result: Kids get a vote in family travel + parents gain valuable insight into locations to visit. A better holiday for the whole family.

The Bound Round series of interactive travel apps use stories, photos, videos and games and are designed for iPhone and iPad. The apps can be downloaded via WiFi and 3G.

The Sydney destination app is currently available free for download until September 8, 2013, when the premium version will then be switched to paid at $1.99. Additional locations including Hong Kong, Gold Coast, Canberra and Fiji are all set to launch throughout September.

Bound Round Specifics

Designed for 4 to 8-year olds to play with before and during their visit to their destination city, it has Read Alone and Read to Me functionality so is suitable for kids at all reading ability levels.

By capturing if a child “wants to visit” a location, the apps provide parents with feedback from the kids on the activities they really want to do when they get there and then provides information on how to get there, opening hours and even discounts available only to Bound Round customers.

When the kids are in a location they can create their own content (photos, writing/typing) in the “My Journal” section of the app. This section also allows the kids to create an e-postcard and email it directly to friends and family.

Made by Kids, For Kids

To ensure the Bound Round content, and the activities and attractions chosen for each destination are absolutely spot-on, Bound Round has established a Kids Board of Directors.

Kids board members are appointed for a 12-month period. Board Members provide honest feedback on the guides developed and also produce a video telling viewers what they love about their home-town (which is included on the app as part of the “Meet a Local Kid” section.)

Hearing is the first human sense to come about – in the fifth month of pregnancy a baby’s ears are already well developed. Even while still in their mother’s womb, babies react to sound stimuli.

Research shows that babies, once born, recognise their mother’s voice. It is also scientifically proven that babies can recognise songs that they had heard up to three months before their birth, and that this memory remains for as long as a year afterwards.

Thanks to delicate musical arrangements, each Babies Love Collection track is an invitation to relaxation and produces a number of benefits to your baby’s emotional and cognitive development.

Through the Babies Love Collection you are now able to bring all these positive benefits to your baby, and at the same time, show your baby your favourite songs!
