Page 1 of 3 About NAPLAN
Since 2008, the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) has replaced all the previous State and Territory based assessments for school students in Australia at Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.
The Program provides an unified system in assessing literacy and numeracy learning of all students, as well as analysing the teaching quality and practices of schools.
The NAPLAN tests are developed collaboratively by the States and Territories, the non-government education sectors and the Australian Government. The central administrative body is the Curriculum Corporation of the Ministerial Council for Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs (MCEECDYA) and the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) .
National data will allow the government to compare results across jurisdictions. Based on the NAPLAN results, ACARA has developed the controversial, yet very popular My School website. The public can now search for the profiles and academic performances of 10,000 Australian schools. My School website also provides the families and community with very valuable references in choosing schools for our children.
The rich data provided by NAPLAN enables ACARA to develop a national Curriculum for Australian students from Kindergarten to Year 10 in the subjects of English, maths, science and history. The Australian Curriculum will be delivered online and enable students of different schools, school systems or states to be taught the same knowledge, skills and understanding.
NAPLAN includes four tests covering numeracy, reading, writing and language conventions (spelling, punctuation and grammar). All Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 sit for the NAPLAN tests simultaneously in May. Students are tested by a combination of multiple choice, short answer and extended response questions.
