Playgroup

What is a Playgroup?

Playgroup is an informal session where parents, grandparents, carers, children and babies meet together in a relaxed environment to socialise, to play together and to exchange ideas. All pre-school children aged from 0 to 5 years can join a playgroup.

Where can I find a Playgroup?

In the Sydney Metropolitan area, there are playgroups in almost every suburb. The sessions are usually held in community and neighbourhood centres, health clinics, women’s centres, preschools and kindergartens, church halls, parks and even in participating member’s houses.

Visit Ourkidz Playgroup Listings and find the most suitable playgroup for you and your child. However, we strongly suggest you check with the individual organiser to ensure that the session time and the location are right, and there is an available place for you.

What does a Playgroup offer?

Depending on the premises and settings where the playgroup is held, there can be Indoor activities and/or outdoor activities.

Indoor activities include:

v Music, singing and dancing;

v Art and craft;

v Group games;

v Storytelling.

Outdoor activities include:

v Sand play;

v Play on the equipment;

v Outdoor games;

v Free play.

During the session, many playgroups also offer the children snacks and accompanying adults cups of coffer or tea.

When the Playgroup is on?

Usually, the playgroups only run during school terms, with each session taking 1.5 to 2 hours during week days. The majority of playgroup sessions are held in the morning hours.

What is the cost to join a Playgroup?

As most of the playgroups are run by not-for-profit community organisations, local councils and local schools, the cost is kept at a minimum. Parents and carers are expected to help with setting-up, picking-up and clean-ups. Adults can take and lead a group of children for particular activities.

Some playgroups charge a low registration fee to cover a period of time, eg. $30 per term, with $2 to be paid at each attendance for the food and drink. The others welcome casual attendance as well as regular ones, that means you only need to pay at each time when you and your child attend the session.

Benefits of joining a Playgroup:

It will help your child developing sensory, social and communication skills through playgroup activities, learn to share and prepare your child going to a childcare or a “big school”.

It also provides parents and carers with a valuable opportunity to meet other parents and carers living in the same area, make friends and share experiences and ideas, while playing with children and nurturing a spirit of co-operation.
