10 fun tips for keeping your kids busy on the rainy days

Guess post submitted by Emily Patterson on behalf of Primrose Schools

As parents, we all dread the rainy day blues, especially when the afflicted party happens to be our cooped-up children. How can we avoid the inevitable boredom that comes with grey rain clouds and booming thunder? If keeping your kids busy seems like a full-time job that costs a full-time salary, it may be time to juice up the "ol' thinkin' cap."

A child's imagination can be a wonderful thing, allowing them to burn off energy and keep busy, while encouraging critical thought and keeping the brain- muscles strong. If you plan on thinking up project ideas for your kids, why not let them get in on that part too? It will give them all the more reason to enjoy the indoor activities in store.

1. Boredom Buster Jar

This is a great way to get your little ones excited about creative activities and let them feel involved in a project that the whole family shares. Sit the family down and ask everyone to contribute ideas for a "Boredom Buster Jar" that will be well within reach of everyone in the household. Try to get the children to think about arts and crafts projects they would like to do together, and some they can do on their own.

Once the jar is stocked, explain to the kids that they and everyone else in the house are welcome to pull an activity from the jar when they are bored, and that they can work on projects together or by themselves.

2. Surprise Endings

Read a story with the kids, and then ask them if the story could have ended differently. Have the children act out, write or illustrate a different version of the story or another ending that they would prefer. This is a fun way to get them thinking critically and help with reading comprehension. It also ties in well with the next couple of ideas.

3. Stories Come to Life

Read a story book with your children and then challenge them to draw their favorite part or character. Showcase their work by putting it up for all to see and letting them describe what their artwork is about and why they chose to create it. You could also put together simple costumes and have the kids act out the story together.
