Sydney’s vibrant new precinct in Darling Harbour opening soon

August, 2011:  Darling Quarter is an exciting, new community precinct in the heart of Sydney. This world-class development, a partnership between Lend Lease and Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, is a true example of social sustainability, regenerating a local area for Sydneysiders and tourists to enjoy day and night.

The new Darling Quarter precinct officially opens to the public on Saturday 24 September, with a ceremony to return the completed project to Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority. The opening day celebrations will bring a carnival-like atmosphere to the family-friendly destination, located in the southern corner of Darling Harbour.  Visitors will enjoy the eclectic mix of new dining and take-away options and children will get the first opportunity to experience the 4,000 square metre playground, the biggest in the heart of Sydney.

MC James Kerley will be keeping families entertained throughout the day, introducing the program of special events and appearances including kids’ favourites Spongebob Squarepants and Patrick Star, live Nickelodeon Slime Time shows, Lah Lah Live, and a 2DayFM live cross.

Bringing an authentic slice of café culture to the heart of Sydney, all the precinct’s select dining and take-away outlets will be open and offering fresh and fabulous food to visitors.  Including a mixture of Sydney operators, each individually designed café and wine bar has something for everyone. Nok of Stir Crazy Thai introduces Nok Nok Thai Eating House; Five Dock’s Trovato family will be cooling things off with Meno Diciotto gelateria while the new Guylian chocolate experience will satiate sweet tooths. Other restaurants include Braza, a Brazilian churrascaria with traditional food and drink offering; Stacks Taverna and Bar, a new Mediterranean grill concept;  Sydney veteran bakery TasteBox and Bowl, a hole in the wall fast fusion Asian takeaway; Janus, a boutique Italian wine bar  Umi Sushi urban sushi diner;  gourmet sandwich creators Fat Duck Rôtissoire Kitchen; and Son of Tuysuz serving traditional Turkish fare.

Sydney’s vibrant new hub for spring and beyond

While opening day celebrations on September 24 will be jam-packed with activities, the Darling Quarter precinct will continue to evolve with a constantly expanding and refreshed program of events from September onwards. Evenings will be graced with small entertainment pieces and intimate live music performances from local musicians.  The spectacular playground will also be open day and night and magically lit for children playing after sunset.

Visitors will be awe inspired by the urban light installation that will feature on the façade of Commonwealth Bank Place at Darling Quarter.  Designed in conjunction with Bruce Ramus, who has directed light shows for international rock acts including U2, R.E.M and David Bowie among other projects, the lighting installation will become interactive to all visitors of Darling Quarter from December. Everyone will have an opportunity to direct their own light performance on a large-scale ‘vertical stage’, and begin to shape their own urban environment.

From January, the relaxing Community Green will be hosting Little Darling Flicks - cosy movie screenings of much-loved kids’ classics for children and parents to enjoy.  Darling Quarter also boasts a multi-purpose children’s theatre and performance facility, opening in 2012, which will contribute to the family entertainment events at Darling Harbour.

While there is easy direct access from nearby public transport points, there is also a 600-bay public car park. The precinct includes additional amenities such as a boutique newsagency and Commonwealth Bank Australia banking facilities.
