4 out of 5 footy fans are reaching for fatty footy snacks and sidelining their greens
The Avo Footy Fuel survey* found footy season is taking armchair athletes to a new level, with one in two families admitting to serving up pies, hotdogs and chips when entertaining friends, to save on time, money and effort.
"Busy schedules and fussy children are no excuse to sacrifice nutrition," says Zoe Bingley-Pullin, Australian Avocados ambassador and nutritionist. "Footy snacks don’t have to be fatty snacks. Australian avocado growers and NRL teams have teamed up to show parents just how easy it can be to serve up a more nutritious option."
In a bid to reduce their fans’ expanding waistlines, the NRL has aligned with Australian Avocados for the third consecutive year. Once again trading footballs for spatulas, Aussie NRL teams are competing in a culinary challenge to encourage more heart-smart avocado footy snacks.
Avocados are a wonderful fruit containing a variety of vital nutrients needed for a healthy body. Avocados are naturally low in sugars and sodium and contain fibre. Just half an avocado (about 100-120g) contains; 15% of RDI for niacin, 15% of RDI for folate, 24% RDI for vitamin C, 19% for vitamin E, 30% for vitamin K and 13% for potassium, to name a few. Avocados also contain colourful carotenoid pigments such as betacarotene, lutein and zeaxanthin necessary antioxidants.
15 NRL health ambassadors have created tasty and easy alternatives to the typical fatty foods devoured while watching one’s favourite footy team battle it out; all featuring the heart-smart favourite: avocado. The 'iheartfooty' Avo recipe Competition is on! Fans can vote for their favourite team recipe at www.avocado.org.au/iheartfooty before 31 August 2011 to have the chance to win two tickets to the 2011 NRL Grand Final and a signed jersey from the winning premiership team.
The club that secures the most votes for their avo recipe will be crowned the ‘iheartfooty’ avocado recipe competition winner and will be awarded $5,000 in essential funding to use toward local community and health programs.
The Avo Footy Fuel survey showed that the obsession with sports stars goes beyond the footy field, with 15% of parents admitting their kids go as far as to choose the same foods as their role models; making it paramount for footy stars to set a good example with their eating habits.
The survey also showed a staggering 58% of fans referred to fatty foods as ‘fun’, ‘special occasion’ foods and over 70% of families say buying hotdogs and pies is a family footy tradition. However, almost one in three parents said they would like to see healthier snacks available at football stadiums.
