Visit the Powerhouse Discovery Centre these school holidays for an adventure that takes you to far and away places!
Take a slow boat to Asia for our Shadow Puppet Workshops, hop on the train to Mumbai to make an Indian Festival Mask and then jet to Japan to make some awesome Origami in our mini-workshops and make-and-do-activities! Young holiday adventurers will find inspiration from ancient artefacts to create a mosaic in our Mastering Mosaics workshop, sit between the sand dunes in our Middle Eastern Calligraphy colouring competition and will need to grab a coat and sled for some icy arctic craft. Also featured these school holidays are our fun-filled holiday shows featuring Harlequin the Clown and Aditi the rickshaw driver, which are sure to transport visitors to some magical far away places!

Harlequin’s Puppet Theatre: The Frog Prince

Join Italy’s most popular clown, Harlequin, and find out what happens when a wicked witch kisses him and turns him into a frog! Unless he finds a beautiful girl to kiss him, he will have to stay a frog, give up spaghetti and eat flies instead! Dennis Murphy is the principal puppeteer behind Murphys Puppets and through extensive touring and his close observation of people from many lands he has developed a crowd of puppet-characters with strange voices, weird accents and human eccentricities. A fun show for all ages! Suitable for all ages. Free with general admission.

Wantanganura (Sky World): Indigenous Storytelling with Graham Davis King

Wednesday 6th July
Join Indigenous artist and storyteller, Graham Davis King, for a very special performance, Wantanganura (Sky World) to celebrate NAIDOC Week. Using props and music, Graham will tell the story of the constellations in the sky, the stories of Aboriginal people, kinship and The Dreamtime. Graham is a Wiradjuri and Ngiyampaa man, who, from an early age was involved in projects that concentrate on sharing his Aboriginal culture. Graham has worked as a dancer and storyteller and has performed in the Koories In Theatre troupe, performing at many venues in and around Sydney, including schools, galleries and museums and also on ABC TV for Playschool. Graham also performed as a dancer with Yidaki Didj and Dance from 1994–2005, travelling and performing across Australia and internationally. Graham currently resides in the Blue Mountains where he set up the Blue Mountains Aboriginal Artists Cooperative in Katoomba and is a Director of the Blue Mountains Aboriginal Culture & Resource Centre. Aditi and her Rickshaw

This highly colourful and theatrical show filled with drama, action and humour depicts the life of Aditi, a rickshaw driver, who shares stories from her own experiences and those told to her by her passengers and the people she meets on the road as she travels to far and away places. Incorporating musical instruments, puppets, costumes and a magnificently decorated rickshaw, this holiday show is sure to entertain, inspire and enthral. Suitable for all ages.

Ganesha & Hanuman: Indian Festival Mask-Making

Used in festivals and celebrations for hundreds of years, traditional Indian masks not only have important cultural and religious significance but are renowned for their impressive colours, shapes and designs. Young crafters can create and decorate their very own Elephant (Ganesha), Monkey (Hanuman) or Tiger (Baagh) mask to take home on the day.
Adult supervision and assistance is required. Suitable for 3–12 years. Bookings essential for groups of 10 or more.
Animals of the Ice! Make a Penguin or Walrus

Some far away places are very cold and hostile, such as Antarctica or the North Pole, but the animals that live there are some of the most fascinating and unusual on earth. This craft activity will have young visitors cutting out, folding and decorating their own Penguin or Walrus and using their imaginations to set off on their own polar adventure with their new friend! Adult supervision and assistance is required. Suitable for 3–12 years. Bookings essential for groups of 10 or more.
MINI WORKSHOP (Includes general admission)
Awesome Origami! Workshop

The Japanese art of paper folding or Origami has been used as a meditation tool and creative outlet in Japanese culture for centuries. Presented by renowned Origami artists, Michael Clonaris and his wife Etsuko Nagashita-Clonaris, this workshop is designed to introduce young visitors to the principles of an age-old traditional art form with some fantastic origami creations, including a blow-up rabbit and cool spinning top! During the workshop, participants will begin with some simple designs before moving on to more intricate Origami pieces which are sure to impress friends and family! Mastering Mosaics Workshop

Presented in partnership with Dynamic Mosaics, young holiday visitors will love mastering the ancient art of mosaics in this fun, hands-on workshop. Mosaics are found in many far away places such as Egypt, Greece and Turkey and to help inspire our young artisans, we are lucky to have on display a stunning 9-metre high glass mosaic panel, The Maid of Abundance, from the former Skygardens Shopping Centre (Sydney), designed by Public Art Squad, Melbourne Mural Studio in 1989. All materials are supplied and participants will leave with their very own mini mosaic to take home.

Puppet Pals! Rod Puppet Workshop

Most people might be familiar with the crazy characters from Sesame Street or The Muppet Show, but puppeteers have been entertaining audiences all over the world for more than 4,000 years! Presented in partnership with the Sydney Puppet Theatre, this workshop introduces kids to a magical world that will stimulate the imagination and encourage creativity by making their own rod puppet. The Sydney Puppet Theatre has toured extensively throughout Australia and overseas and are well known for their lively stage shows. Suitable for 5–12 years. $35 / $30

Out of the Shadows! Shadow Puppet Workshop

These school holidays we are taking a trip to Asia to discover a magical form of storytelling called Shadow Play.
Presented in partnership with Sydney Puppet Theatre, participants will design, make and operate a 3-piece shadow puppet and then stage their own mini performance in our specially constructed shadow box theatre. Lego® Build: Construction Workshop

Become a Lego® master builder! Presented in partnership with Computer Explorers, this full-day, hands-on, fun workshop will stimulate creativity while developing teamwork and problem solving skills. Introducing concepts of 3-D visualization, participants will work in small teams to build houses, castles and towers of strength using Lego®. Please note that this workshop does not include Lego® to take home at the end of the workshop. Suitable for 6–8 years.

Lego® Robotics Workshop

Presented in partnership with Computer Explorers, this full-day, hands-on workshop teaches participants the basic skills of robotics using Lego® RCX bricks and software (Lego® 1999). During the workshop and working in teams of three, participants will build robots with Lego® and then program them to move, dance and conquer obstacle courses using touch and light sensors. Later in the day, teams participate in a challenge to determine the best-designed robot on the day. Please note that this workshop does not include a robot to take home at the end of the workshop.

Game On! Computer Game Design Workshop

Ever had a great idea for a computer game? Presented in partnership with Computer Explorers, this workshop will equip participants with the skills to create their own personalised computer game. Working in pairs, the workshop begins with a tour of the Discovery Centre to find inspiration and then participants will design and create their own computer game. At the end of the workshop, participants take home their game to play—with 30-day free trial software—to continue to add to and play their game! Suitable for 8–12 years. $60 / $55 Powerhouse members.

Shutter Bug! Digital Photography Workshop

Get ready to go camera crazy at the Discovery Centre! Build your own awesome camera obscura, seek out clues in a museum photo scavenger hunt, create a cool photo button badge and have your best picture taken on the day framed and ready to hang. Presented by Light Pop Photography, this creative hands-on workshop will help you unlock the potential of your digital camera, learn techniques used by the professionals and discover the joy that photography can bring. Please note that participants are required to bring their own camera, fully recharged battery, USB cable and to have a basic operating knowledge of their own camera. Far, Far Away! Middle Eastern Calligraphy Colouring Competition

As part of our ‘Far and Away Places’ theme, the Discovery Centre takes visitors to the Middle East with our beautiful calligraphy colouring competition. Prizes will be awarded in three age categories - Category 1 (under 5 years), Category 2 (5–8 years) and Category 3 (8–12 years). Competition closes at 4.00pm, Friday 15th July, 2011. Jai Ho! Bollywood Musical Chairs
