Being a father changes your life forever. Being involved as a Father means being there for your child from birth to young adulthood (in fact it is a life long calling). Here are NAPCAN’s top ten tips on how to be more involved in your child’s life this Father’s Day and beyond.

Work out how you can better balance your work hours so you can spend time with your child and your partner.
  1. Play with your child – fly a kite, kick a ball, go to the park.
  2. Include your child in your life, work in the garden, wash the car or invite them to go with you to your leisure activities.
  3. Organise activities as a family. Family activities are very special and may develop into traditions.
  4. Communicate with your partner how to best nurture your child as a couple.
  5. Be involved in your child’s life. Know what is going on at school or child care – names of friends, teachers or carer, likes and dislikes.
  6. Be involved in school or child care activities. Help out with sports games, volunteer at the centre or regularly transport your child to and from care or school.
  7. Be a good listener and your child will appreciate having you as a ‘sounding board’.
  8. Set the rules but respect the child’s ideas.
  9. Spend time with your partner – share how you feel.

Children need their dads to spend time with them, give them lots of encouragement and show them that they are loved. Spending time with your children can remind you how to enjoy the simple pleasures of life again. NAPCAN produces brochures which provide additional tips on being a great Father.
