Starting Kindergarten


What Your Child Will Need For School?

A school hat, a school bag and a library bag (usually available from the school office);

A change of underwear (in a plastic bag, placed inside of the school bag, in case of an accident);

A lunch box and a plastic drink bottle; and

A raincoat.

Write Your Child's Name Clearly On Everything he or she brings to school.


Food

There are 2 breaks during the school day in most of the schools:

  • Recess (little lunch) at around 11:00am
  • Lunch (big lunch) at around 1:00pm, following by outside play. Lunch can be a sandwich, a drink and a piece of fruit. Do Not Pack Large Amount.


Getting Your Child Ready For School

1 Talk to your child about "big school" and how excited it will be.

 

2 Teach your child to (list of practice):

Get dressed by herself or herself. Practice tying shoelaces and doing up buttons.

Read or recognise his or her name.

Develop healthy habits - your child must be able to go to the toilet unassisted. Remind child to wash hands.

Behave responsibly - your child is responsible for his or her belongings at school. He or she will be required to both pack and undpack his or her schoolbag and lunch box several times each day. Parctice at home. Children must care for toys, books and classroom equipment.

Carry out simple instructions, eg. put plates away in cupboard and close the cupboard door.

 

3 Provide your child some experience in:

Opening and closing his or her schoolbag;

Unpacking and eating his or her little lunch and lunch;

Dressing for school;

Listening to stories and talking about picktures;

Greeting friends and adults by name;

Saying "please" and "thank you";

Sharing and taking turns;

Being away from mother or father.

 


Safety

Make sure your child knows some safety facts. Teach him or her to:

Walk on the footpath and cross the road carefully;

Never run onto the road or step out between cars;

Take care when getting off a bus;

Play in a safe place;

Make sure he or she knows to wait with the supervising teacher until collect.

 


Activities Your Child Should Be Encouraged To Do At Home

Outdoor play - skipping, dancing, rolling, climbing, catching, throwing, jumping, hopping & etc;

Play with water and sand using different sized and shaped containers;

Modelling with playdough or plasticine;

Play with dress-up clothes, boxes, odds and ends - encourage your child to use his or her imagination.

Drawing and painting with large crayons and brushes on large pieces of paper;

Cutting out with large crayons and brushes on large pieces of papger;

Playing with construction toys, eg. Duplo, Lego.

 


The First Day

Arrive at school on time;

Bring your child to the Kindergarten classroom/ teacher;

Kiss your child and leave immediately;

Make sure all your child's belongings, eg. hat, lunchbox, jumper, drink bottle, are clearly labelled;

Go home, have a little cry - and then RELEX (and don't forget to pick up your child).
