MAM, the global BPA-free babycare innovator, congratulates the Australian Government and major retailers for agreeing on a voluntary phase out of baby bottles containing Bisphenol A (BPA).
“Over the years, thousands of Australian parents have told us they are very concerned about this particular material,” Sudhakar Rao, Managing Director, MAM Australia, says.
Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Health, Mark Butler says the phase out beginning today 1 July 2010 follows rising public concern.
“The Australian Government appreciates there has been a level of public concern relating to BPA in baby bottles and, as such, has worked extensively with retailers to introduce the phase out,” Mr Butler says.
MAM prides itself on leading innovation and as a responsible manufacturer decided to be proactive on this issue over six years ago, developing its first range of BPA-free baby bottles in 2004.
“Since then MAM has phased out polycarbonate, which contains BPA, from its entire range,” Mr Rao says. “Now all MAM products are made of polypropylene (PP), latex and silicone, none of which contain BPA.”
That’s why MAM applauds the Australian Government’s announcement.
“I think it’s the correct and safe decision because parents don’t want uncertainty, ” Mr Rao says. “The discussion on BPA safety has been going on for years since the material has long been under scrutiny by the medical and scientific community. Although BPA is currently considered non toxic, some studies suggest the chemical acts in the body in a similar way to oestrogen, thereby disturbing the hormone balance.
“While research into BPA-related health issues is still ongoing, MAM is the only brand that provides a completely BPA-free range of babycare products –not just bottles – for parents’ peace of mind,” Mr Rao says.
