We teach from the NSW Board of Studies'syllabus documents:

- Creative Arts
- Personal Development Health & Physical Education
Additionally, we also teach the subject of Religion based on the guidelines set out by the Catholic Education Office.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
Enrichment Programs - All teachers at St Mel's differentiate the curriculum to cater for the needs of their students. Special individual programs are written for gifted and/or talented students. There are also other opportunities, such as some Debating, Enrichment groups at the local level and with other schools.
Programs for Students with Special Needs - We have a strong Special Education program supported by two Special Education teachers and four aides.
Bi-lingual aides – St Mel's has bi-lingual aides for Arabic and Vietnamese speaking students and parents. Translators in other languages are available if needed.
Language Programs - We have Arabic classes for students of Arabic background in Years 5 to 6.
ESL (English as second language) Programs – we have 2 full time ESL teachers and have a strong ESL program which all teachers follow due to our high multicultural community. Our Staff are all trained in the 'Language Featureds of text types' program. Students new to Australia are also eligible for New Arrival's support depending on their visa and this Government funded.
Social Justice Program – St Mel's School is committed to Social Justice Outreach and each term we have a school based fundraiser to raise money to support a charity. We annually support St Vincent de Paul Christmas drive and Project Compassion. The Parents of St Mel's and the Parish combine to support The Biggest Morning Tea.
Anti-Racism/ anti-bullying program - a policy is followed through the school and we celebrate Harmony Day each term.

Peer Support Program – for students from Kindergarten to Year 6. This deals with a variety of issues such as resilience and bulling.
'Seasons For Growth' program - for children who experienced loss through death, separation or divorce.
Counsellor from the Catholic Education Office comes to St Mel's once a fortnight and a social worker who works with children each week.
EXTRA-CURRICULUM PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES:
Debate Program- Year 5 and 6 take part in a debating program in Term 3 of each year with other Catholic Primary schools in our cluster of schools.
Learn to Swimming Program – At present we participate in a swimming program at MLC Pool, Burwood.
Sports – alternate years we participate in a Gymnastics programs, where trained teachers come and complete a program for the students for approximately 8 weeks.
Arts - we have visiting artists to the school eg. Musica Viva, Cartoonist, Mary MacKillop Show. We participate in Art and Drawing competitions throughout the year. We also have a choir that performs at religious celebrations and other occasions.
DIVERSE LEARNING DAY - In 2008 we launched our Diverse Learning Day program which happens three times a year for a 5 to 8 week period. All students are involved in this program which occurs on Friday morning and in their stage groups, eg. Stage 1 is Year 1 and 2, the children choose programs they would like to participate in active and passive activities throughout the year.
Some of the programs include:
- Physical Programs, such as, martial art, touch football, soccer, netball, dance
- Creative Programs, such as, insect art, weaving, cross stitch, painting
- Language Programs, such as, Italian, Arabic, Vietnamese, French
- Other programs, scuh as, web design, public speaking

Our main feeder school is Holy Spirit College Lakemba – co-educational college and Domremy College Five Dock - Girls Year 7-12.
